By the time she reached the damn, Lili had developed a plan to ensure that she did not suffer a repeat of her earlier accident. She lay her wand across the river just above the damn, securing each end firmly into the ground of the riverbank. She then fastened the strap of her shield around the wand, so that the shield floated on the water, concave side up, like a boat moored to either riverbank by the wand. Lili then climbed into her "boat", kneeling down to keep her centre of gravity low, and pushed herself off from the river bank. From this position, she was able to cut through the damn with her sword without having to stand on it.
Lili drove her sword through the damn again and again, not allowing herself to look at the setting sun which had now sunk almost entirely from view, leaving naught but the faintest sliver above the horizon.
With one final slice, the damn gave way and crashed down to the lake below, the previously trapped waters behind it quick to follow. The rush of freshly released water raged past the riverbanks, pulling Lili's wand loose from its mooring, and wand, shield, Lili and all flew down the waterfall. Lili held on tightly to her shield and somehow managed to keep her little boat from capsizing when they hit the lake below.
The freshly created current swirled through the lake and carried Lili and the joyous Undines out into a second river which flowed westward to the sea. In the fading light of the setting sun, the Undines gathered around Lili's boat. The bulk of them seemed to be hurrying the river along, and Lili with it, chasing the sun as it crept ever closer to the westward horizon. One of the Undines grabbed onto the side of Lili's shield and allowed its hand to flow over Lili's own hand, which was gripping the edge of her shield, hanging on to the racing boat for dear life. The Undines had not spoken to Lili before this point, but now, with their hands touching, Lili could feel the Undine's words through their joint contact.
"You have served us well this day, Lili of the human realm," said the Undine. "Your quick thinking and willingness to lend a hand has allowed our waters to flow freely again but now you must act just as quickly on your own behalf. Behold, the sun is almost gone from our skies! Take this cup, as our gift to you, and drink fully of its contents immediately."
The Undine reached its other hand up out of the water and presented to Lili a beautiful, long-stemmed chalice, carved from a multicoloured sea shell. The shell cup was full to the brim with the river's water, and Lili was indeed thirsty. As Lili and her Undine escort approached the open sea, and the final crescent of sun slid below the horizon, Lili lifted the shell to her lips and drank all of its contents.
