Secrets of the Runes

The work of deciphering the Tree Trolls' runes can be tricky because the runes are not all one-to-one correspondences with characters in our alphabet. Here are some tips to help you out:

1. As Amanda noted, the Tree Trolls do not differentiate between P and B. They cannot hear any distinction between the two sounds and therefore represent them as the same character. This is also true for Y and J as well as for S and Z.

2. The Tree Trolls do not have a rune for Q. They would most likely interpret this sound as a K.

3. The Tree Trolls also do not have a rune for X. They would most likely interpret the X sound as KS.

4. The Tree Trolls might not always follow our rules of spelling. They have a tendency to omit the silent E on the end of words. They also represent a hard C as well as the combination CK with the rune for K. The rune which most closely corresponds with our C is used for soft C only.

5. The Tree Trolls have several runes which correspond to pairings of two of our letters. We have already seen two of these, the runes for AE and TH, in the story. The other double character runes are shown below.

GH = GH         NG = NG         AE = AE         OE = OE
