Amanda stirred in her sleep. The voices around her, and the soft scurrying of little feet were obviously being kept low, yet she could hear everything acutely. Too acutely. Amanda suddenly remembered falling into her desk, hiking through Twilight Tanglewood, climbing inside the giant tree - and her sumptuous feast. Amanda jerked awake and bolted upright. She had been drugged!
"Welcome to Twilight Tanglewood," said a strange and yet all too familiar voice.
Amanda turned to the sound of the voice and caught her first good look at a Tree Troll. It was small and green, with large hands and feet, and bright blue eyes which seemed to glow from within. It wasn't scary looking at all though. In fact, it was rather cute.
"You're a Tree Troll?!" asked Amanda incredulously.
"You were expecting something different, I gather," replied the Troll.
"You could say that," Amanda nodded. "What have you done to me?"
"Your hearing will return to normal shortly," said the small green creature. "We have fed you plants which will enhance your hearing only for a short while, so that we might converse."
"I don't understand."
"We have studied your language, Left-Foot Right-Foot."
Amanda gasped! The tunnel dwellers! She looked into the Tree Troll's glowing eyes and knew now why she recognized them. Her travelling companions the whole time through the Tanglewood tunnel had been none other than the Trolls themselves!
"We were able to learn the structure of your language easily enough," continued the Troll, "but our voices cannot produce some of your sounds at a pitch which is audible to you. That is why we fed you the fruits of our land; so that your hearing might be attuned to the frequencies at which we speak in the Tanglewood."
"Am I a prisoner here?" asked Amanda.
