Dealing with Griefers Part 3:
Sit Your Ground

If someone is disrupting your Second Life experience by pushing you around, don't get angry, Sit Your Ground.

Please remember that the person who is bumping into you may be doing so unintentionally (if they cannot see you or have limited control over their own movement) and, if the offender is trying to grief you, getting angry will only encourage the griefer to continue. If, however, you sit down -- on the ground or on a non-physical object -- no one can push you around. Not with an avatar-to-avatar bump, not with an object, not with a script... Thanks to the magic of SL physics, sitting is pretty much the physical equivalent of muting. Just right-click and select "Sit Here".

This is a great trick for anytime you're trying to work in a crowded sandbox and don't want to be pushed away from your build, or for when there's a griefer in the area with a push-weapon and you want to stay put, but Second Life is a big world, with lots to see and do. How do you deal with a griefer who has trapped you in a cage when you want to be up and about and exploring?

Believe it or not, sitting is still the answer!

You can sit yourself out of a cage. Just right-click on the ground or on a non-physical object which is outside of your cage and select Sit Here.

You are now free to stand up and continue on your merry way -- but, if that griefer is still around with her cage gun, try this:

"Sit" on a non-physical vehicle.

Physical vehicles are designed to interact with Second Life's physics engine and as such can still be pushed around, but the magic of Linden Scripting Language allows us to create vehicles which can be moved around by the person "sitting" on them but which are non-physical and therefore cannot be pushed around by outside forces.

If you're not a scripter yourself, you can pick up a FREE non-physical anti-griefing vehicle in-world. I got this nifty little number from Lumiere Noir:

This shiny red box contains scripts originally developed by Jesrad Seraph and modified by Lumi and is generously made available to Second Life residents for free! Simply rez the anti-griefing vehicle on the ground, right-click on it and select "PROTECT" (In this case "PROTECT" == "Sit Here". Content creators can specify the text which appears in the Sit portion of an object's pie menu, but as far as SL physics is concerned, choosing the option at 10:30 - whatever it is called - will "Sit" your avatar on the object.)

The box will turn transparent while you are "sitting" on it and you will appear to hover. You can now use your movement keys to navigate, almost as you would normally. Your avatar will no longer walk up and down stairs or other prim inclines, as an avatar which is "sitting" on an object in Second Life can pass right through other objects (including cages!). Instead, use your Page Up and Page Down keys to change your elevation while using your anti-griefing vehicle. Additionally, your avatar will not perform a walking animation, but you will move around under your own control and be invincible to griefers' push weapons.

(Want a different look to your anti-griefing vehicle? Lumi's AGV is distributed with open permissions, so you can modify it however you like. Ride a magic carpet or a flying horse. The choices are as wide as your imagination and creativity can conjure up!)

Sitting on the ground, a stationary object or a non-physical vehicle will protect you from pushing abuse in Second Life - if you see it coming. If you are caught unaware, however, you may need to retreat to the safety of Home.
