NAMASTE

The word, Namaste (pronounced: nam-a-stay) is a Sanskrit term, used as a greeting, a farewell and an honouring of self and other. It is often accompanied by the Namaste Mudra (gesture) which is performed by pressing the palms of one's hands together before one's heart and bowing the head, thereby surrendering your ego, showing that your hands are unarmed, and that you come in peace. The hands folded in prayer position also symbolize celebration and honour. The left and right hand brought together depict union and centeredness.

Word and mudra have the same meaning and can be used together or interchangeably.

"Nama" means "bow", "as" means "I" and "te" means "you". Therefore, Namaste literally means "bow me to you" or "I bow to you."

It may also be translated as:

"The God(dess) in me greets and honors the God(dess) in you."

"The Spirit within me honours the Spirit within you."

"I salute the divine qualities in you."

"My soul bows to your soul."

and, perhaps most fully as:

"I honour the place in you in which the entire universe dwells.
I honour the place in you which is of Love, of Truth, of Light and of Peace.
I honour the place in me in which the entire universe dwells.
I honour the place in me which is of Love, of Truth, of Light and of Peace.
When you are in that place in you and I am in that place in me, we are one."

How powerful!
We are one.
There is no me and you. No us and them.
We are one. All beautiful. All sacred. All holy. All divine.
Each and every one of us.

When we honour one another with Namaste, we tear down the walls that separate us and come together in Love, in Truth, in Light and in Peace.

We are one.
